Amazon FSx for Windows File Server pricing

Overview

With Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, you only pay for the resources you use and there are no minimum fees or set-up charges. While pricing is quoted on a monthly basis, your usage is prorated by the hour, and you are billed for your average usage over a month. You pay for the storage and throughput capacity that you specify for your file system, and for any back-ups of your file system. You will also pay for data transferred ‘in’ to and ‘out’ from Amazon FSx across Availability Zones (AZs) or VPC peering connections in the same AWS Region and for data transferred ‘out’ from Amazon FSx to other AWS Regions.

Categories

There are five categories to consider when storing and managing your data: storage capacity, SSD IOPS, throughput capacity, back-ups and data transfer.

The price of storage capacity depends on the deployment type (single-AZ or multi-AZ) and the storage type (SSD or HDD) that you choose for your file system.

You pay for the average amount of storage provisioned for your file systems per month, measured in gigabyte-months ‘GB-Months’, as shown in the pricing example.

By default, three IOPS are included for every GB of SSD storage. You can optionally provision a higher level of IOPS, and you pay for the average IOPS provisioned above your included rate for the month, measured in ‘IOPS-months’.

The price of throughput capacity depends on the deployment type (single-AZ or multi-AZ) that you choose for your file system.

You pay for the average throughput capacity that you’ve provisioned for your file systems per month, measured in ‘MBps-months’. For multi-AZ file systems, the cost to transfer data between AZs for replication of data is included in the throughput capacity price.

Back-ups – both automatic and user-initiated – incur back-up storage charges. Back-ups are incremental, which means that only the changes after your most recent back-up are saved, so you save on storage costs by not duplicating data. You pay for the average amount of back-up storage per month, measured in ‘GB-months’.

Data transferred ‘in’ to and ‘out’ from Amazon FSx across AZs or VPC peering connections in the same region is charged at the rate for data transfer within the same region. Note that data transfer incurred for replication of data across AZs for multi-AZ file systems is included in the throughput capacity price.

Data transferred ‘out’ from Amazon FSx to another region (including for copying back-ups across regions) is charged at the inter-region rate for the specific inter-region transfer.

Data deduplication

Amazon FSx can also deduplicate and compress your data. Typical savings are as follows:

Content Typical storage savings
Office documents, photos, music and videos 30–50%
Software binaries, build files and programme symbols 70–80%
General-purpose file share contents (mix of the above) 50–60%

Pricing

  • Single-AZ deployment
  • Multi-AZ deployment

Pricing example

Assume that you want to store 10 TB of general-purpose file-share data using HDD storage in the US East (N. Virginia) region. Based on typical deduplication savings of 50-60%, you provision a 5 TB multi-AZ file system with 16 MBps of throughput capacity. Assume you have an average back-up storage of 5 TB during the month.

Total monthly charge:

Storage: 5 TB * €0.021 GB-month = €109.84/mo

Throughput: 16 MBps * €3.862/MBps-month = €61.79/mo

Backup: 5 TB * €0.043/GB-month = €219.68/mo

Total monthly charge: €391.31 (€0.039/GB-mo for 10 TB of data)
