Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP pricing
AWS Pricing Calculator
Calculate your Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and architecture cost in a single estimate.
With Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, you pay only for the resources you use and there are no minimum fees or set-up charges. While pricing is quoted on a monthly basis, your usage is prorated by the hour, and you are billed for your average usage over a month. There are five Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP components to consider when storing and managing your data: SSD storage, SSD IOPS, capacity pool usage, throughput capacity and back-ups.
SSD storage: you pay for the average amount of storage provisioned for your file systems per month, measured in gigabyte-months (GB-months).
SSD IOPS: by default, three IOPS are included for every GB of SSD storage. You can optionally provision a higher level of IOPS, and you pay for the average IOPS provisioned above your included rate for the month, measured in IOPS-months.
Capacity pool usage: capacity pool storage is elastic storage that’s cost-optimised for infrequently accessed data. Amazon FSx automatically transitions data from SSD storage to capacity pool storage based on your access patterns. With capacity pool storage, you only pay for the storage space consumed. Specifically, you pay for the average amount of storage consumed per month, measured in GB-months. For data that is in capacity pool storage, you also pay requests costs (per read and write operation) whenever the data is accessed.
Throughput capacity: you pay for the average throughput capacity you’ve provisioned for your file systems per month, measured in MBps-months. The cost to transfer data between Availability Zones (AZs) for replication of data is included in the throughput capacity price.
Back-ups: with back-ups, you only pay for the storage space consumed. Back-ups are incremental, which means that only the changes after your most recent back-up are saved, so you save on storage costs by not duplicating data. You pay for the average amount of back-up storage consumed per month, measured in GB-months.
Effective storage pricing for a typical file system (select AWS Regions)
Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP supports ONTAP’s storage efficiency features (compression and deduplication) to reduce the storage capacity that your data consumes. You can enable compression and deduplication for data in SSD storage, capacity pool storage and back-ups. Typical savings are as follows:
Region effective storage price (€/GB-month)*
| Region | Single-AZ deployment | Multi-AZ deployment |
| US East (N. Virginia) | €0.02 | €0.04 |
| US West (Oregon) | €0.02 | €0.04 |
| Africa (Cape Town) | €0.03 | €0.05 |
| Asia Pacific (Seoul) | €0.02 | €0.04 |
| Canada (Central) | €0.02 | €0.04 |
| Europe (Ireland) | €0.02 | €0.04 |
| AWS GovCloud (US-East) | €0.03 | €0.05 |

Example 1: Multi-AZ deployment
Assume you want to store 100 TB of data in the US East (N. Virginia) region for an application where 80% of the data is infrequently accessed (industry research and customer analysis shows that on average, 20% of files are actively used and 80% are infrequently accessed). To reduce your storage costs, Amazon FSx automatically tiers 80% of your data (80 TB of data) to the capacity pool tier while keeping the remaining 20% of your data (20 TB of data) in SSD storage.
Based on typical storage efficiency savings (65% for general-purpose file-sharing workloads), you provision 7 TB of SSD storage capacity for the 20 TB of actively accessed data and you use 28 TB of capacity pool storage for the remaining 80 TB of data.
Assume that you provision 1,024 MBps of throughput capacity (50 MBps of throughput capacity per TB of SSD data) and have an average of 100 TB of back-up data during the month. Based on typical storage efficiency savings for back-ups (65%), you use 35 TB of back-up storage to store the 100 TB of back-up data.
Total monthly charge:
SSD storage: 7 TB * €0.215/GB-month = €1,537.78/mo
Capacity pool storage: 28 TB * €0.0376/GB-month = €1,077.82/mo
Throughput: 1,024 MBps * €1.03/MBps-month = €1,054.65/mo
Total monthly charge (excluding back-ups): €3,670.25 (€0.036/GB-mo for 100 TB of data)
Back-ups: 35 TB * €0.043/GB-month = €1,537.78/mo
Total monthly charge (including backups): €5,208.03 (€0.051/GB-mo for 100 TB of data)
- Industry research and customer analysis shows that on average, 20% of files are actively used and 80% are infrequently accessed.

Example 2: Single-AZ deployment
Assume you want to store 10 TB of data in the US East (N. Virginia) region for an application where 100% of the data is stored in SSD. Based on typical storage efficiency savings (65% for general-purpose file sharing workloads), you provision 3.5 TB of SSD storage capacity for the 10 TB of SSD data. Assume you want to provision 20,000 SSD IOPS for your workload. By default, three SSD IOPS are included for every GB of SSD storage. For 3.5 TB of SSD storage, you get 10,752 IOPS included. If you provision 20,000 SSD IOPS for your file system, you will be charged for the additional 9,248 SSD IOPS (20,000 – 10,752 = 9,248).
Assume you provision 512 MBps of throughput capacity (50 MBps of throughput capacity per TB of SSD data) and have an average of 10 TB of back-up data during the month. Based on typical storage efficiency savings for back-ups (65%), you use 3.5 TB of back-up storage to store 10 TB of back-up data.
Total monthly charge:
SSD storage: 3.5 TB * €0.107/GB-month = €384.45/mo
Throughput: 512 MBps * €0.618/MBps-month = €316.65/mo
Additional SSD IOPS (for 3.5 TB of storage, 10,752 IOPS are already included): 9,248 * €0.015/IOPS-month = €134.73/mo
Total monthly charge (excluding back-ups): €835.83 (€0.082/GB-mo for 10 TB of data)
Back-ups: 3.5 TB * €0.043/GB-month = €153.61/mo
Total monthly charge (including back-ups): €989.44 (€0.096/GB-mo for 10 TB of data)
