AWS European Sovereign Cloud
Built in Europe, operated in Europe, controlled in Europe, secured in Europe
An independent cloud for Europe
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a new, independent cloud for Europe entirely located within the European Union (EU), designed to help customers meet their evolving sovereignty requirements. Launching in 2025, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be the only fully featured, independently operated sovereign cloud backed by strong technical controls, sovereign assurances, and legal protections designed to meet the needs of European governments and enterprises. Find out how customers and partners can benefit from the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which offers the same service portfolio, security features, availability, performance, and architecture, on our FAQ webpage.
Investing in Europe
Deep commitment to Europe
Our roots in Europe run deep, and Amazon has contributed to economic growth and job creation here for more than 25 years. This includes investing more than €250 billion since 2010 and employing more than 225,000 people across the continent. For example, the teams at our research and development centres in Ireland and Germany help contribute to developing cutting-edge technology for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), including the AWS Nitro System that powers all our modern EC2 instances.
We’re building further infrastructure to help customers with more choice and the capability to meet Europe’s regulatory, data residency, and operational requirements.
European-based control, governance, and operations
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will operate with an independent governance structure, dedicated Security Operations Center, and under a newly established parent company that will be locally controlled in the EU, led by EU citizens, and subject to local laws. The management team of the parent company will include Kathrin Renz and Stéphane Israël, both EU citizens residing in the EU and experienced business leaders, strengthening the operational autonomy of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
